Ryder Cup Predictions, Match-by-Match
Friday Morning — Foursomes (Alternate-Shot)
1. Scheffler / Burns (USA) vs. McIlroy / Fleetwood (EUR)
Rory starts fast out of the gates. But as the match comes down the stretch, the combination of Scheffler’s deadly accuracy and Burns’ stellar putting helps the USA battle back and steal a half-point.
Prediction: Match tied (halved)
2. Cantlay / Schauffele (USA) vs. Lowry / Rose (EUR)
The battle-tested tandem of Xander and Patty Ice is far too much for Europe to handle in the early. session. A 3-up front-nine advantage never subsides.
Prediction: USA wins 3&2
3. Morikawa / Spaun (USA) vs. Hovland / Åberg (EUR)
The USA march out a pair of major champions in Morikawa and Spaun, but the Scandinavian machine is too strong. The outcome of this one is never in question throughout.
Prediction: EUR wins 3&2
4. Thomas / DeChambeau (USA) vs. Rahm / Hatton (EUR)
A back-and-forth slugfest. DeChambeau’s driver is on, JT’s short game is magical, and Rahm squanders a great chance to halve the match with a missed birdie putt on 18. The USA secure a huge point and the outright lead after the morning session.
Prediction: USA wins 1 UP
Friday Afternoon — Fourballs
5. DeChambeau / Young (USA) vs. Rahm / Højgaard (EUR)
These four guys take lines off the tee that most couldn’t dream of. But, it turns out to be the clutch putting of Europe’s lone debutant that gets Europe on the board first in the afternoon session.
Prediction: EUR wins 1 UP
6. Scheffler / Thomas (USA) vs. McIlroy / Hovland (EUR)
A heavyweight classic. These tandems trade birdies throughout the match, with neither able to build more than a 1-up lead. All square with 3 holes to go, neither team can separate, and that’s how this one finishes.
Prediction: Match tied (halved)
7. Griffin / Schauffele (USA) vs. MacIntyre / Rose (EUR)
We find out in this match that Ben Griffin’s swagger and confidence could make him a Ryder Cup staple for years to come. Schauffele contributes occasionally, but it’s the former mortgage loan officer who looks like the A-player throughout.
Prediction: USA wins 2&1
8. Henley / English (USA) vs. Straka / Fitzpatrick (EUR)
The Americans grind with fairways and greens, but ultimately can’t sink enough putts. On the contrary, Fitzpatrick makes everything down the stretch to draw Europe even after day one.
Prediction: EUR wins 2&1
Saturday Morning — Foursomes
9. Cantlay / Schauffele (USA) vs. McIlroy / Fleetwood (EUR)
With the support of Fleetwood’s consistent ball-striking, Rory finally banks a full-point for Europe. And it’s the most lopsided match of the tournament, as they eviscerate the trust American duo. Europe takes the early Saturday lead.
Prediction: EUR wins 6&4
10. Scheffler / Burns (USA) vs. Hovland / Åberg (EUR)
Each captain goes back to a familiar pairing. The match is close throughout, but the young Nordic tandem flexes on the world #1 and improves to 2-0-0 on the weekend. Europe nabs the first two Saturday matches.
Prediction: EUR wins 2&1
11. Morikawa / Young (USA) vs. Fitzpatrick / Rose (EUR)
Cameron Young struggles, starting his Ryder Cup career 0-2. The British duo of Fitz and Rosey avoids big mistakes and makes it three straight points in Europe’s column. A Saturday morning blue wave has the Americans reeling.
Prediction: EUR wins 4&2
12. DeChambeau / Thomas (USA) vs. Rahm / Hatton (EUR)
The temperament of Bryson and JT are put to the test as they watch the other three matches turn blue ahead. Their major champion pedigree pays off, as they flip the match with birdies on 16 and 17. The USA stays within striking distance.
Prediction: USA wins 1 UP
Saturday Afternoon — Fourballs
13. Cantlay / Schauffele (USA) vs. McIlroy / Lowry (EUR)
After a morning drubbing at the hands of McIlroy, you’d think it unlikely for Captain Bradley to send out the same pairing first in the afternoon. But… revenge is a dish best served red, white, and blue. In one of the weekend’s most electric matches, Cantlay and Schauffele get it done.
Prediction: USA wins 1 UP
14. Scheffler / Spaun (USA) vs. Rahm / MacIntyre (EUR)
The US captain pairs up this year’s top two point-getters. Their incredible seasons continue, as Scottie would not be denied on the back-nine.
Prediction: USA wins 2&1
15. English / Young (USA) vs. Hovland / Åberg (EUR)
Simply, a mismatch. Hovland and Åberg control this one from the first tee, improving to 3-0-0 in the tournament, and 5-1-0 overall as a tandem. Europe gets on the board in the afternoon session.
Prediction: EUR wins 4&3
16. Griffin / Henley (USA) vs. Straka / Højgaard (EUR)
With a chance to tie the Ryder Cup ahead of Sunday singles, Ben Griffin answers the bell. Again.
Prediction: USA wins 2 UP
Sunday — Singles
17. Scheffler (USA) vs. McIlroy (EUR)
The crowd gets the matchup they want in the all-important first Sunday singles match. The grand slam winner again starts fast, but Scottie steadies and cashes in on every Rory mistake. The USA bank the crucial first point.
Prediction: Scheffler (USA) wins 2&1, USA leads 9-8
18. Schauffele (USA) vs. Rahm (EUR)
Xander wasn’t in his top form on days 1 and 2. But after falling behind Rahm by a couple of holes, he finds his form just in time to salvage a half-point for the Americans.
Prediction: Match is tied (halved), USA leads 9.5-8.5
19. Morikawa (USA) vs. Hovland (EUR)
Based on current form, Viktor Hovland is the sure-favorite. Morikawa, though, makes a rash of birdies on the back-nine to tighten the match late. It’s not enough. Vik posts an undefeated weekend in his 3rd Ryder Cup.
Prediction: Hovland (EUR) wins 1 up, tournament tied 9.5-9.5
20. Cantlay (USA) vs. Fleetwood (EUR)
An incredible matchup of experienced Ryder Cuppers. The hat comes off, and Patty Ice delivers once again in front of the home crowd.
Prediction: Cantlay(USA) wins 3&1, USA leads 10.5-9.5
21. Thomas (USA) vs. Hatton (EUR)
After building a small lead in the first few Saturday matches, a bit of a shock to the system for the USA, as the heartbeat of their squad gets beat handily.
Prediction: Hatton (EUR) wins 5&4, tournament tied 10.5-10.5
22. Young (USA) vs. Åberg (EUR)
The big Swede shows off his talent and his smile. It’s a forgettable first Ryder Cup experience for NY-native Cameron Young. Europe back on top.
Prediction: Åberg (EUR) wins 3&2, EUR leads 11.5-10.5
23. Dechambeau (USA) vs. Straka (EUR)
This one is over before the turn. In a matchup of contrasting styles, Bryson’s power is too much for Straka. The Austrian wins a couple of holes on the back-nine, but it’s too little, too late. A laugher for Dechambeau.
Prediction: DeChambeau (USA) wins 4&3, tournament tied 11.5-11.5
24. Burns (USA) vs. Fitzpatrick (EUR)
Burns’ normally trusty flatstick lets him down in Sunday singles. Fitz takes advantage, capping off a tremendous weekend for the Englishman in his 4th Ryder Cup.
Prediction: Fitzpatrick (EUR) wins 2 up, EUR leads 12.5-11.5
25. English (USA) vs. MacIntyre (EUR)
A matchup of polar opposite temperaments. While Harris English had to be desperate to contribute his first point of the weekend, you sure couldn’t see it through his calm demeanor. He ties it up, and sends the American fans into frenzy at Bethpage.
Prediction: English (USA) wins 1 up, tournament tied 12.5-12.5
26. Henley (USA) vs. Rose (EUR)
For the oft-reliable Rose, the putts just don’t go in this time around. With the final two matches behind him undecided, Russell Henley delivers, and puts the USA back in front.
Prediction: Henley (USA) wins 1 up, USA leads 13.5-12.5
27. Spaun (USA) vs. Lowry (EUR)
A clear mismatch in experience. JJ hangs tough, but Lowry shuts the door with birdies on the final two holes.
Prediction: Lowry (EUR) wins 2 up, tournament tied 13.5-13.5
28. Griffin (USA) vs. Højgaard (EUR)
The dream scenario becomes a reality–a deadlock tie with one match to go, two Ryder Cup rookies battling for the decisive point. If you read the rest of this article, you probably know where this is going.
There’s a new Captain America, and his name is Ben Griffin.
Prediction: Griffin (USA) wins 1 up, USA win 14.5-13.5
The USA, by the thinnest of margin, recapture the coveted Ryder Cup!
In the end, our Ryder Cup predictions say this comes down to what it always does: moxie, team camaraderie, and clutch putts. But this time, the overarching story is one rookie who didn’t know he was supposed to be nervous. Europe’s spine (Rory/Rahm/Hovland/Åberg) lands plenty of haymakers and even turns Saturday morning blue, but the U.S. depth and a few ice-cold moments—Cantlay/Schauffele’s revenge, Scheffler’s opening-point on Sunday, and Bryson’s jolt—keep the door cracked just enough for Captain America 2.0 to step through it and slam it closed on Europeans.
Will it play out exactly like this? Certainly not—and that’s the fun. Our match-by-match is a map of where momentum could break: foursomes volatility, a putter streaking at the right (or wrong) time, rookies earning real minutes, and captains trusting their gut over spreadsheets. If we’re right, we’ll claim prescience; if we’re wrong, we’ll blame the Ryder Cup for being beautifully chaotic.
Jokes aside–circle the first tee shot Friday. From there, résumés go quiet and heartbeats get loud. It can’t come soon enough.
